 Shrule/Glencorrib pip the Sarsfields
The Sarsfields poor run in Division 1 A of The Welcome Inn senior league continued when they were edged out by Shrule/Glencorrib in round six in a well contested match played in Shrule recently. This defeat leaves the Sarsfields hovering dangerously in the basement end of the table and a couple of wins are of paramount importance in their remaining games if they are to maintain their division 1 a status.
The scoreline of 2-8 to 0-13 in favour of the South Mayo men indicates the closeness of the game throughout and it hinged on two goals both of which went the home side’s way which were crucial to final outcome.  The Sarsfields to be fair played some good stuff but two cardinal defensive lapses cost them victory in the finish and these blemishes blotted an otherwise god performance with several players really prominent all through in what was an encouraging performance with a big month ahead for the team in terms of championship and their defence of the Moclair Cup.  There was little to choose between the team after a whirlwind start by the home side who raced into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead after fifteen minutes. The Sarsfields were in a hole but slowly they edged their way back into to the game thanks to some fine scores by Joseph McBrien and Paul Mulligan who was at his best from both the hand and the land. By the time the interval arrived, the Sarsfields were just one point in arrears having pegged the scoreline back to 0-6 to 0-5 with Shrule just holding sway.  The second half was a ding dong affair with both sides slugging it out and going for the jugular in terms of victory. Shrule opened with a point but Brendan Quinn cancelled this out with a fine effort from distance. Then came the first of the home side’s goals when Mark Ronaldson availed of some slack sarsfields marking to slide rule the ball under the advancing David Sloyan in the sarsfields goal to give Shrule a real fillip in terms of morale and confidence.
The Sarsfields were reeling but they dug in and three points in quick succession from Paul Mulligan two from frees and one from play brought the visitors right back into contention. They were rocked back on their heels a minute later however when a costly turnover in the Sarsfields half back line  saw Brian Murphy with a clear run through on goal and despite the best efforts of sarsfields full back Daragh McMeel who half blocked his shot which diverted the path of the ball away from the diving David Sloyan in the Sarsfields goal to send the home supporters into raptures of delight and in contrast deflate the sarsfields team and management who must have been ruing their luck at this stage.   It looked game set and match for the home side but the Sarsfields once again battled back and four  quick points on the bounce left just one between them once again as the clock ticked down to the finish. Time was the Sarsfields enemy however and the kick out following David Tiernan score signalled full time and left the sarsfields crestfallen as they had invested so much in a match that was most definitely there for the taking.  They had good performances form Daragh McMeel, David Caffrey, Enda Casey and Aidan Higgins in defence. Benny Quinn had a fine game at midfield fielding superbly on occasions and landing one fine point to underline his good form.  In attack Paul Mulligan had a super match bagging a personal tally of 0-9 and showing loads of endeavour and leadership as he gave his marker a tough hour. He got good support from Martin Mulvaney who had a very good second half winning loads of breaking ball and working tirelessly off the ball in search of possession. David Tiernan too when introduced at half time also made some plays and with the Sarsfields injury list beginning to clear up they will be looking forward to having a good second half of the season as the team nears something like it’s best form.

The Sarsfields will be hoping to have a strong panel available to them for selection as a win will leave them in good shape and see them top the group with Kiltaine the final game in their section coming a week later. Sarsfields Development Draw
The Sarsfields G.A.A. Club are busy promoting their Development draw which has been well received by the general public as the club  strive to fund and pay for the many and exciting developments which have taken place in O`Hara Park since the turn of the year. This draw is a novel idea with ticket prices ranging from five but not exceeding fifteen euro. The ticket price is contained in an envelope the price of which can be five euro fifteen pence or thirteen euro fifty six pence depending on the price marked on the ticket inside the envelope. The club are promoting them hard in the run up to the holiday weekend and they are looking for as much support as possible as they aim to sell in excess of one thousand tickets to make it a worthwhile and profitable exercise. All support is gratefully received and with a prize fund of two thousand euro on offer it’s well worth a gamble with the first prize a whopping 1 000 Euro which would be a nice haul to net in these turbulent financial times. There will be also ten 100 consolation prizes on offer as well so it represents good value for money and with the tickets very reasonably priced it provides a fighting chance to everybody to win some cash. The draw will be held in KD’s Bar Church Street, Charlestown on the August Bank Holiday weekend so with time running out now is your time to make a purchase which just might net you a lovely cash prize to spend with a vengeance as the holiday season gets into full swing.

Charlestown trio compete in Humbert Half Iron Triathlon Challenge

Well done to the Charlestown trio of Nuala O`Donnell –Johnson, Christina Duffy and Emmet Gavaghan who competed under the Team Charlestown banner which took part in the Humbert Half Iron Triathlon Challenge which was held in Swinford on Sunday July 25th. The event which was hosted by the Swinford Tri Club and was a resounding success and attracted a huge number of entries from all over Ireland to compete in the three disciplines which were a 1.9Km swim, a 90Km cycle and a 20 Km run. Team Charlestown selected three excellent competitors with Nuala doing the swim, Emmet taking over on the bike with Christina completing the run and all three performed superbly in their respective disciplines and did the team proud. Well done to Nuala who honed her stroke in the swimming pool in Church Street, Charlestown and the many years she spent in the pool served her well in what were a tough swim and a real test of endurance. She got through it with aplomb however and is a proof positive of the virtues of practise and dedication where she spent many a day developing her talents in the swimming pool which stood her in good stead for the swim. Eileen McGuinness another Charlestown  lady who spent many an hour in the Charlestown swimming pool also completed the swim with distinction and she’s another product of the Charlestown swimming pool and was without doubt one of  the finest swimmers to graduate from the pool.
Emmet Gavaghan took up the baton on the cycle and finished in an excellent time with the all the hard work and many hours of cycling he has been putting in on the roads over the last year or so paying handsome dividends. Emmet has taken to the bike in a big way and he follows a great tradition of bikes as his dad Marty ran a very successful bicycle shop for years in Barrack Street so it’s fair to say Emmet was reared on bikes and he’s maintaining the tradition in no small way with his pedal power which sees him clocking up big distances in good times.
Christina Duffy took over the baton for the 20Km run and she did the side proud putting in a very respectable time which is no great surprise as she regularly takes to the roads around Charlestown a couple of times a week and this dedication has served her well as she taken part and competed in several marathons over the years and has the whole demanding form of distance running off to a fine art. Well done to all three participants and to Eileen McGuiness and Kathy Regan another Charlestown lady who also took part in the swim and completed with honours.

Charlestown Notes 21st July 2010
Under-21`s defeat Shrule/Glencorrib
Charlestown Sarsfields kept alive their play-off hopes with a nail biting 0-12 to 1-8 victory over Shrule /Glencorrib in their second round group game played at Shrule last week. It was a must win game for the Sarsfields having been defeated by Kiltaine in their opening match and they showed bags of spirit and tenacity to dig out a result in a game that looked to be slipping away from them in the final frantic few minutes when the home side threw everything at the sarsfields in a bid to snatch the victory. The Sarsfields didn’t buckle however and just about deserved their victory and they had good performances from the likes of Patrick Walsh and Damien Ward in defence who were outstanding with Alan Doherty, Shane Gallagher, Paul Ward and Sean Mulvaney doing the business up front and securing the crucial scores to keep the Sarsfields alive in what’s turning up to be a very competitive group. Keeper Gareth O`Donnell must come in for a special mention as he saved a crucial penalty mid way through the second half to preserve the Sarsfields lead and did very well between the posts for the second game in succession.

Under-12`s Defeated by St Gerard’s
Charlestown Sarsfields under -12 team made the journey to Hollymount to take on the St Gerard’s amalgamation in their latest outing of the under-12 league. The Sarsfields came home empty handed however as the home side put in a strong second half performance to overhaul the sarsfields and claim both points. The Sarsfields can be pleased with their performance as they were short several regulars and showed commendable battling qualities and spirit to force the home side to pull out all the stops before eventually going under by a couple of points. The Sarsfields will be hoping to build on this performance in the coming weeks and secure the win their efforts most definitely deserve.

Under-8 Training
Under -8 training for boys takes place in O`Hara Park on Friday evenings between 6-7pm. All are welcome as the Sarsfields gets ready to coach and teach the next batch of would be Sarsfields stars.

Charlestown Notes 7th July 2010
Sarsfields defeat Breaffy to remain on course
Charlestown Sarsfields senior team who have had something of a topsy turvy season to date really got some momentum into their campaign with a hard fought 1-8 to 1-7 over Breaffy in section 3 round 2 of The Travellers Friend sponsored senior championship played at Breaffy recently.
This was a key win for the Sarsfields and all the more commendable as they had to line out without a plethora of regulars who were laid low by injury which has really disrupted the Sarsfields season to date. The game was played in a gale force wind which mitigated against any good football and the game was a real test of endurance with both teams having to dig in and show plenty of metal and mental strength.  It was the Sarsfields who had the advantage of the elements in the first and they raced out of the blocks scoring 1-2 in the first two minutes with Paul Mulligan fisting to the net to give the visitors a real tonic start. The Sarsfields were lording matters in all sectors of the field and were 1-4 to 0-1 in front and good value for their lead.
Breaffy however started to get a foothold in the middle third and slowly but surely began to inch their way back into the game and they got a real boost when Alan Durcan goaled from a penalty to bring about a seismic shift in the score as well as the pattern of play.
The Sarsfields lost their way and despite a huge breeze at their backs all they could manage was one further point while the home side tagged on two more to leave the half time score 1-5 to 1-3 in favour of the green and white.  The Sarsfields lead looked extremely paltry and meagre considering the strength of the win and Breaffy were well pleased with their first thirty minutes work and looked odds on to inflict defeat on the Sarsfields
In the second half however the Sarsfields displayed their experience and composure as they toughed it out and really upped their play to frustrate and thwart any potential defeat and upset. Sean Morris and Thomas Parsons became increasingly more prominent in the middle and won plenty of possession as the Sarsfields used their possession game to good effect to make some inroads into a Breaffy defence which was come under increasing pressure.
Despite the wind Breaffy could make no headway against a well organised and solid sarsfields defence with David Caffrey magnificent at corner back as he cut off and intercepted many dangerous looking Breaffy raids with some wonderful vigilance and anticipation. He got good support from Patrick Walsh and Daragh McMeel who were equally as good and presented a tough last line of defence.  The half back line was almost equally as effective with Aidan Higgins and Colm Maye upping the level of their play considerably on the first half while Dermot Higgins also contributed and made several useful forays into the Breaffy half against the breeze.  The Sarsfields held Breaffy scoreless for a full twenty seven minutes while they in turn tagged on three fine points courtesy of Oliver Conway, Paul Mulligan and Enda Casey which gave them a cushion as the breeze strengthened further.
Breaffy were devoid of ideas and eventually Alan Durcan got them on the scoreboard with a free from distance to inject some life into their spluttering challenge. The game was spoiled somewhat by a melee five minutes from the finish which saw players wade in from all sides and when the dust settled two players one from each side received their marching orders which were somewhat lenient as several others could have followed the same path if the referee had seen the full impact.
The melee saw the referee play nine minutes of injury time and in that time Breaffy landed two further points to reduce the gap to the minimum but the Sarsfields held firm to eke out a deserved win which sees them top the section with games against Westport and Kiltaine to come in August. Apart from the aforementioned others to catch the eye were Paul Mulligan who was excellent in both halves and was a great outlet for possession particularly in the second half when the Sarsfields were under the cosh against the breeze. Enda Casey can be pleased with his hour’s work as he ranged far and wide in search of possession and landed a crucial score in the second half to maintain the Sarsfields lead. Benny Quinn, Joe Owens, Tony Mulligan also had their moments with sub David Tiernan while far from fully fit lifting the Sarsfields spirits on his arrival and getting his hands on some precious ball. A good day for the Sarsfields and one which might well have a crucial bearing on the outcome of the group.

Juniors defeated by Mitchels in Championship

Charlestown Sarsfields junior team recent unbeaten run came to a grinding halt recently when they were outgunned by Castlebar Mitchels in round 2 of the junior championship played at McHale Park recently. The scoreline of 2-10 to0-6 in favour of the Mitchels indicated the gulf in class between the teams on the night with the Mitchels stripping a much fitter and better balanced the team than the Sarsfields who were baling water at an early stage and never quite got to grips with the pace and movement of the home team who had the match in the bag long before the final whistle. The Sarsfields lacked nothing in effort or endeavour but they didn’t have the quality in the key areas of the pitch most particularly in the forward division which apart from the wily Sean Higgins lacked any real spark or creativity. Their best players on the night were Thomas Meehan, Joseph Owens, Rory Gallagher, Sean Higgins and Brian Sheerin who had an excellent game in an over worked defence.

Under – 21`s Lose to Kiltaine
Charlestown Sarsfields under-21 team got their aspirations for the County B title off to am lost inauspicious start when they were defeated by Kiltaine in round 1 on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-7 in a low key game played at O`Hara Park last week. The Sarsfields never hit top gear and paid the price for their inaccuracy and lack of conviction in front of the sticks in contrast to their opponents who were much more clinical with the chances that came their way and they made the long journey home content with a job well done. The Sarsfields enjoyed loads of possession but they were much too lateral and predictable in attack and squandered an abundance of possession in front of the Kiltaine posts with some wayward shooting and over elaboration.
They did manage to take the game to the wire when Shane Gallagher goaled late in the game but they just couldn’t find the all elusive scores to get something out of a match they will have much to rue over. The Sarsfields will be disappointed at the manner of the loss and while several players failed to find their best form those that did included Patrick Walsh, Thomas Meehan, Sean Morris and Cormac Henry who to be fair never gave up the ghost and carried the fight to Kiltaine right to the bitter end. Shrule-Glencorrib and Davitts are the other teams in their group and this defeat leaves the Sarsfields with plenty to do if they are to make the knock out stages.

Sarsfields Development Draw

The Charlestown Sarsfields G.A.A. Club will be announcing a new development draw to help fund the many new and exciting development work that has taken place in O`Hara Park since the turn of the year. These developments include the installation of a new sanding area which is a huge addition to the club and will take huge pressure off the main and training pitches which are under increasing demand considering the large number of teams the Sarsfields field every week in both male and female codes. They have also erected a splendid new perimeter tubular fencing structure   around the perimeter of O`Hara park and have squared off the pitch which has lengthened the dimensions and only enhanced the quality of an already top class facility. The new draw the details of which have yet to be ironed out and confirmed will involve tickets at a range of prices varying from 1 euro to twenty euro plus and by providing this type of ticket they hope to make it appeal to all sections of the community and make it as affordable as possible in these recessionary times. The executive hope to have these tickets on the market in the next couple of weeks and more details to will be confirmed and published as they come to hand. The executive deserve great credit for what’s taken place already in the first six months of the year and they deserve every support in this new initiative  as the club continue to set the standards in terms of facilities and their provision.  Tickets will cost between 5 and 15 Euro and there will be a prize fund of 2000 Euro which is very attractive indeed and the club have the tickets available and on the market at the moment and are hopeful of attracting plenty of support over the next 5-6 weeks with the club hoping to draw the winners in Kd’s Bar on the Bank Holiday weekend in early August. More details anon!
