Sarsfields defeat Breaffy to remain on course
Charlestown Sarsfields senior team who have had something of a topsy turvy season to date really got some momentum into their campaign with a hard fought 1-8 to 1-7 over Breaffy in section 3 round 2 of The Travellers Friend sponsored senior championship played at Breaffy recently.
This was a key win for the Sarsfields and all the more commendable as they had to line out without a plethora of regulars who were laid low by injury which has really disrupted the Sarsfields season to date. The game was played in a gale force wind which mitigated against any good football and the game was a real test of endurance with both teams having to dig in and show plenty of metal and mental strength.  It was the Sarsfields who had the advantage of the elements in the first and they raced out of the blocks scoring 1-2 in the first two minutes with Paul Mulligan fisting to the net to give the visitors a real tonic start. The Sarsfields were lording matters in all sectors of the field and were 1-4 to 0-1 in front and good value for their lead.
Breaffy however started to get a foothold in the middle third and slowly but surely began to inch their way back into the game and they got a real boost when Alan Durcan goaled from a penalty to bring about a seismic shift in the score as well as the pattern of play.
The Sarsfields lost their way and despite a huge breeze at their backs all they could manage was one further point while the home side tagged on two more to leave the half time score 1-5 to 1-3 in favour of the green and white.  The Sarsfields lead looked extremely paltry and meagre considering the strength of the win and Breaffy were well pleased with their first thirty minutes work and looked odds on to inflict defeat on the Sarsfields
In the second half however the Sarsfields displayed their experience and composure as they toughed it out and really upped their play to frustrate and thwart any potential defeat and upset. Sean Morris and Thomas Parsons became increasingly more prominent in the middle and won plenty of possession as the Sarsfields used their possession game to good effect to make some inroads into a Breaffy defence which was come under increasing pressure.
Despite the wind Breaffy could make no headway against a well organised and solid sarsfields defence with David Caffrey magnificent at corner back as he cut off and intercepted many dangerous looking Breaffy raids with some wonderful vigilance and anticipation. He got good support from Patrick Walsh and Daragh McMeel who were equally as good and presented a tough last line of defence.  The half back line was almost equally as effective with Aidan Higgins and Colm Maye upping the level of their play considerably on the first half while Dermot Higgins also contributed and made several useful forays into the Breaffy half against the breeze.  The Sarsfields held Breaffy scoreless for a full twenty seven minutes while they in turn tagged on three fine points courtesy of Oliver Conway, Paul Mulligan and Enda Casey which gave them a cushion as the breeze strengthened further.
Breaffy were devoid of ideas and eventually Alan Durcan got them on the scoreboard with a free from distance to inject some life into their spluttering challenge. The game was spoiled somewhat by a melee five minutes from the finish which saw players wade in from all sides and when the dust settled two players one from each side received their marching orders which were somewhat lenient as several others could have followed the same path if the referee had seen the full impact.
The melee saw the referee play nine minutes of injury time and in that time Breaffy landed two further points to reduce the gap to the minimum but the Sarsfields held firm to eke out a deserved win which sees them top the section with games against Westport and Kiltaine to come in August. Apart from the aforementioned others to catch the eye were Paul Mulligan who was excellent in both halves and was a great outlet for possession particularly in the second half when the Sarsfields were under the cosh against the breeze. Enda Casey can be pleased with his hour’s work as he ranged far and wide in search of possession and landed a crucial score in the second half to maintain the Sarsfields lead. Benny Quinn, Joe Owens, Tony Mulligan also had their moments with sub David Tiernan while far from fully fit lifting the Sarsfields spirits on his arrival and getting his hands on some precious ball. A good day for the Sarsfields and one which might well have a crucial bearing on the outcome of the group.

Juniors defeated by Mitchels in Championship

Charlestown Sarsfields junior team recent unbeaten run came to a grinding halt recently when they were outgunned by Castlebar Mitchels in round 2 of the junior championship played at McHale Park recently. The scoreline of 2-10 to0-6 in favour of the Mitchels indicated the gulf in class between the teams on the night with the Mitchels stripping a much fitter and better balanced the team than the Sarsfields who were baling water at an early stage and never quite got to grips with the pace and movement of the home team who had the match in the bag long before the final whistle. The Sarsfields lacked nothing in effort or endeavour but they didn’t have the quality in the key areas of the pitch most particularly in the forward division which apart from the wily Sean Higgins lacked any real spark or creativity. Their best players on the night were Thomas Meehan, Joseph Owens, Rory Gallagher, Sean Higgins and Brian Sheerin who had an excellent game in an over worked defence.

Under – 21`s Lose to Kiltaine
Charlestown Sarsfields under-21 team got their aspirations for the County B title off to am lost inauspicious start when they were defeated by Kiltaine in round 1 on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-7 in a low key game played at O`Hara Park last week. The Sarsfields never hit top gear and paid the price for their inaccuracy and lack of conviction in front of the sticks in contrast to their opponents who were much more clinical with the chances that came their way and they made the long journey home content with a job well done. The Sarsfields enjoyed loads of possession but they were much too lateral and predictable in attack and squandered an abundance of possession in front of the Kiltaine posts with some wayward shooting and over elaboration.
They did manage to take the game to the wire when Shane Gallagher goaled late in the game but they just couldn’t find the all elusive scores to get something out of a match they will have much to rue over. The Sarsfields will be disappointed at the manner of the loss and while several players failed to find their best form those that did included Patrick Walsh, Thomas Meehan, Sean Morris and Cormac Henry who to be fair never gave up the ghost and carried the fight to Kiltaine right to the bitter end. Shrule-Glencorrib and Davitts are the other teams in their group and this defeat leaves the Sarsfields with plenty to do if they are to make the knock out stages.

Sarsfields Development Draw

The Charlestown Sarsfields G.A.A. Club will be announcing a new development draw to help fund the many new and exciting development work that has taken place in O`Hara Park since the turn of the year. These developments include the installation of a new sanding area which is a huge addition to the club and will take huge pressure off the main and training pitches which are under increasing demand considering the large number of teams the Sarsfields field every week in both male and female codes. They have also erected a splendid new perimeter tubular fencing structure   around the perimeter of O`Hara park and have squared off the pitch which has lengthened the dimensions and only enhanced the quality of an already top class facility. The new draw the details of which have yet to be ironed out and confirmed will involve tickets at a range of prices varying from 1 euro to twenty euro plus and by providing this type of ticket they hope to make it appeal to all sections of the community and make it as affordable as possible in these recessionary times. The executive hope to have these tickets on the market in the next couple of weeks and more details to will be confirmed and published as they come to hand. The executive deserve great credit for what’s taken place already in the first six months of the year and they deserve every support in this new initiative  as the club continue to set the standards in terms of facilities and their provision.  Tickets will cost between 5 and 15 Euro and there will be a prize fund of 2000 Euro which is very attractive indeed and the club have the tickets available and on the market at the moment and are hopeful of attracting plenty of support over the next 5-6 weeks with the club hoping to draw the winners in Kd’s Bar on the Bank Holiday weekend in early August. More details anon!
